ICF blocks are one of the outstanding products manufactured and used worldwide. People in every corner of the world are using these blocks to build their homes and offices for various applications. ICF blocks are created through a process called “pouring,” which is very hands-on and time-consuming.

To create an ICF block, we start by stacking large columns made of polystyrene foam along the foundation’s exterior walls. Next, we pour concrete into the center of each column until it rises to just below the top edge and hardens. Once hardened, the concrete is screeded to provide a flat surface on top. We then take 4×8 sheets of 3/4″ thick steel wool (called roving) and place them along one side’s vertical edge before pouring more concrete to seal it.

Here is how ICF blocks are made. You might have seen these fantastic blocks, which provide insulation and help us to stay warm during the winter and cool in the summer, but do you know how they are made?

First Step

Firstly, we start by manufacturing lumber such as OSB or plywood. Which creates a continuous grain bond face on each side of the panels. Lumber is also manufactured with an oriented strand board (OSB) with alternating layers of wood fibers running at right angles, forming a grid pattern when cut into pieces laterally.

After making the lumber, we must get it in the required size. So it is cut into small blocks, and then these blocks are nailed to a formwork resembling an ice-cream box frame. This formwork keeps the lumber in shape. A support formwork is also attached to the bottom of this. Then both are welded together with aluminum or any other material per design requirement and manufacturing process.

Next Step

The next step is that all these units are filled with the concrete mixture using vibrators or vibratory conveyor belts until all unit voids are filled with concrete. All the external holes are sealed with plywood or metal retaining forms and heavy-duty plastic sheeting.

Lastly

After that, these blocks are placed in a curing chamber for 24 hours to get adequately cured. Then these blocks are inspected for quality of concrete before removal from their frames. After that, we make them ready for flooring and roofing as per our requirements, which is different in every project. These blocks have no end-life issues attached to them, so that we can use them for many generations.
